Various Artists: Hicks From The Sticks
Consisting as it does of a mixture of already-released tracks and gems from the vaults,'Hicks' constitutes an 'alternative characters' collection, and as such highlights the way the indie chart is rapidly becoming a nesting ground for low-rank name bands. According to Des Moines, the conceptual realist behind this album, Modern Eon's 'Choreography' and Ada Wilson and Keeping Dark's 'Head In the Clouds' have both been top of the hair-shirt parade. While "choreography' has a decent construction to it, the Ada Wilson track is a hideous example of how simple it is to be a shark in a goldfish bowl, scoring hits with a guaranteed audience of alternative record buyers. Shades of the Dandelion label and all its attendant culty marvellousness. [edited for content] -Kevin Fitzgerald, NME April 5, 1980
